30 Laws That Keep Complex Systems From Rotting
Or: What Building Mission-Critical Autonomous Systems Taught Me About Architectural Purity
I've spent the past year building an autonomous system that operates in real-time, high-stakes environments where failure is costly. It handles vision processing across multiple concurrent data streams, makes millisecond-precision decisions, and executes actions with sub-second timing constraints.
But this isn't a post about my specific system.
This is about the 30 architectural laws I discovered (the hard way) that prevent complex systems from collapsing under their own weight.
These laws emerged from brutal necessity. When you're building a system with:
- Multiple layers of abstraction (vision → detection → decision → execution)
- Complete process isolation (everything can crash, nothing breaks)
- True domain agnosticism (swap problem domains without infrastructure changes)
- Real-time constraints across dozens of concurrent streams
...you quickly learn that most "best practices" are either too vague to enforce or too specific to generalize.
These 30 laws are different. They're concrete, enforceable, and applicable to any complex system.
The Laws
On State
1. Your canonical state store is God. If it's not there, it doesn't exist.
If state lives outside your single source of truth, you've already lost. Hidden caches, silent flags, in-memory assumptions — these are where systems die.
In my system, I use Redis as the canonical state layer. Every process is stateless. If Redis lives, the system lives. This means I can restart any process without losing system state.
7. No hidden state outside your canonical store. No memory caches. No silent flags. No cross-process whispers.
This isn't about Redis specifically. It's about refusing to let state leak into dark corners where it becomes un-queryable, un-debuggable, un-recoverable.
On Boundaries
2. No logic where it does not belong. If a layer "understands" something it shouldn't, entropy has begun.
The most common architectural failure I've seen: layers that start making decisions outside their responsibility. A database layer that "knows" about business rules. An execution layer that "understands" strategy. A UI that contains business logic.
The moment a layer crosses its boundary, maintenance cost explodes.
3. Infrastructure never knows domain.
Lifecycle management cannot understand business logic.
Execution cannot understand strategy.
Message queues cannot understand meaning.
Your framework should never know what it's executing. The day your HTTP layer understands your business domain is the day refactoring becomes impossible.
4. Domain never orchestrates infrastructure.
Decision logic outputs choices. It does not coordinate workers. It does not manage lifecycle. It does not enforce timing.
Your business logic should output decisions, not manage how those decisions get executed. Orchestration is infrastructure's job.
On Workers
8. No global coordination between workers. They react to shared state. They do not talk to each other.
In my system, each unit of work gets its own isolated worker. Workers never coordinate with each other. They only read shared state and update their own slice of it.
This scales indefinitely because there's no coordination overhead. One worker handling one unit perfectly means infinite workers handle infinite units perfectly.
This applies to microservices, actor models, distributed workers — anything that processes independent units of work.
25. The hand must never start thinking.
Workers execute. They don't strategize. The moment your execution layer starts making business decisions is the moment your system becomes unmaintainable.
26. The thinker must never start executing.
Strategy layers output decisions. They don't coordinate execution. If your decision module is managing worker pools, you've violated the boundary.
On Agnosticism
11. If replacing your domain requires infrastructure change — you failed.
This is my favorite test. Can you swap your entire business domain without touching your infrastructure?
In my system:
- Vision processing can interpret different types of visual data using the same engines
- Action execution can handle different command types using the same interface
- Lifecycle management doesn't know what domain is being processed
If your "generic framework" requires code changes when you swap domains, it was never generic.
13. Lifecycle state is procedural, not semantic.
Your infrastructure knows "thing created → thing validated → thing executed → thing completed."
It does NOT know domain-specific semantics.
Semantic understanding belongs to domain modules. Infrastructure only knows states and transitions.
14. Decision modules are plugins, not pillars.
The decision logic is a module that can be replaced. The system doesn't depend on it architecturally — it depends on it functionally.
This distinction matters. Architectural dependencies can't be removed. Functional dependencies can be swapped.
On Execution
9. Execution is mechanical. It translates decisions to actions. It never corrects strategy.
Your execution layer receives decisions and executes them. It does NOT decide whether the decision is correct. It does NOT second-guess the strategy.
10. Self-correction at execution layer is architectural rot.
The moment your execution layer starts saying "this decision seems wrong, let me adjust it" is the moment your boundaries have collapsed.
Execution executes. Period.
On Communication
5. Messages carry meaning. They do not interpret meaning.
In my system, decision requests get passed from workers to the decision engine. These requests contain all information needed to make a decision — but they don't interpret that information.
Messages between layers should be opaque data structures that carry meaning without understanding it.
6. Opaque data protects agnosticism. If lifecycle can inspect domain internals, purity is already cracked.
Your framework should handle messages without understanding them. The day your message bus starts parsing business data is the day you've coupled infrastructure to domain.
On Authority
18. Authority must flow downward, never sideways.
Vision → Worker → Decision → Execution
Not Vision ↔ Decision
Not Worker ↔ Execution
Not Decision ↔ State directly (except through contract)
Sideways communication is coordination. Coordination is coupling. Coupling is death at scale.
On Observation vs Control
24. Observers may halt. They must not compensate.
In my system, there's a monitoring process that watches system health. It can detect issues and halt the system. It cannot fix issues by compensating at runtime.
Observer patterns are powerful. But the moment an observer starts "fixing" issues instead of escalating them, you've created a hidden control layer that nobody understands.
15. Clean boundaries reduce supervision.
The cleaner your boundaries, the less you need to watch the system. Monitoring becomes simple: is each layer doing its one job correctly?
Dirty boundaries require constant supervision because failures cascade in unpredictable ways.
On Debugging
16. Never fix symptoms across layers. Fix ownership.
When something breaks, the temptation is to patch it where you see it. But if the symptom appears in layer A and the root cause is in layer B, patching layer A just hides the problem.
Find the ownership boundary that was violated. Fix that.
17. If something "feels off," find the boundary violation. Not a patch.
Architectural nausea is a signal. That feeling of "this doesn't seem right" is usually your brain detecting a boundary violation before you've consciously identified it.
Don't patch the feeling away. Investigate the boundary.
29. Architectural nausea is a signal. Verify it objectively.
When something feels wrong, don't dismiss it as "just a feeling." Map out the layers, trace the dependencies, identify the violated boundary.
You'll almost always find it.
On Maintenance
22. If a shortcut is tempting when tired, that's where corruption enters.
The shortcuts you're tempted to take when exhausted are precisely the places where your architecture is too complex.
If "just this once" feels necessary, your boundaries are wrong.
30. Purity buys freedom. Entropy buys maintenance.
Clean architecture is more work upfront. But it means you can:
- Add features without fear
- Debug issues in minutes instead of days
- Swap entire subsystems without cascading changes
- Scale without rewriting
Dirty architecture is easy at first. But every shortcut you take compounds. Eventually, you spend more time managing entropy than building features.
On Replaceability
23. Domain logic must be replaceable without emotional resistance.
If the thought of swapping your core domain logic makes you anxious because "so much would break," your architecture is coupled.
Domain logic should be plug-and-play. If it's not, you've leaked domain assumptions into infrastructure.
27. If you can remove a module and nothing else trembles, you built it right.
The test: can you delete your decision engine and replace it with a stub that returns random decisions? Does the rest of the system still work?
If yes: good architecture.
If no: find the hidden dependencies.
On Complexity
12. Decision logic answers questions. It does not run the world.
Your core logic (decision engine, business rules) should be a pure function:
Input → Decision
It should NOT:
- Manage worker pools
- Coordinate execution
- Track global state
- Orchestrate timing
Those are infrastructure concerns.
19. Boring is success. If the system becomes exciting, drift has started.
Systems should be boring. Predictable. Mechanical.
If your system is constantly "exciting" — surprising behaviors, unexpected interactions, emergent complexity — you have drift.
Excitement in production is a sign that boundaries have blurred.
On Process
20. Intensity designs. Protocol preserves.
Architecture happens in bursts of intense focus. You can't architect by committee or incrementally. You need to hold the entire system in your head at once.
But once the architecture is locked, you switch to protocol: enforce the boundaries, validate the assumptions, prevent drift through process.
21. Agnosticism is structural, not philosophical.
"Agnostic design" isn't about being ideologically opposed to coupling. It's about structure: if your layers don't know about each other's internals, they can't couple.
Make coupling structurally impossible and you don't need to rely on discipline.
On Knowing When You've Won
28. The more pure the boundaries, the less you need to watch the system.
When your architecture is clean, monitoring is trivial. Each layer either works or doesn't. Failures don't cascade mysteriously.
If you find yourself building complex monitoring because "the system is hard to understand," your boundaries are wrong.
On Meta-Awareness
31. When in doubt, check this list. If the answer isn't here, the question reveals a missing boundary.
These laws should answer most architectural questions. If you have a question they don't answer, it's probably because you haven't properly defined a boundary.
Why These Laws Emerged
My system forced these principles because of four constraints:
1. Multi-layer complexity: Vision → Detection → Decision → Execution requires clean boundaries or the system becomes unmaintainable.
2. Process isolation: Everything crashes. The system must survive any single component death. This requires complete state externalization.
3. Complete agnosticism: The system has to handle different problem domains without code changes. This forced true registry-driven design.
4. Real-time at scale: Multiple concurrent streams means no coordination overhead. Workers must be independent. State must be fast.
These constraints don't allow architectural laziness. Every violation of these laws shows up immediately as a bug, a bottleneck, or an impossible refactor.
The Counter-Intuitive Breakthrough
Early in development, I hit what seemed like an intractable complexity problem. The natural approach led to variable state structures, countless edge cases, and unpredictable data flow.
The breakthrough came from mathematical abstraction: treating fixed reference points as actors rather than following dynamic entities.
The insight: Sometimes the "obvious" solution creates chaos. The counter-intuitive approach — using fixed coordinates in a system that appears to need dynamic tracking — can eliminate entire classes of problems.
This required:
- Mathematical thinking beyond conventional approaches
- Deep domain understanding
- Willingness to ignore "obvious" solutions
- Pattern recognition through abstraction
Key learning: AI couldn't discover this. I prompted extensively, explored variations, but the breakthrough required human insight that connects multiple domains in non-obvious ways.
This is why human architectural thinking remains irreplaceable, even with sophisticated AI assistance.
How to Use These Laws
These aren't suggestions. They're invariants.
Here's how I use them:
1. In Design
When architecting a new system, I check each proposed boundary against these laws. If a boundary violates a law, I redesign it.
2. In Code Review
When reviewing code, I look for law violations:
- Does this execution layer understand business logic? (Law #3)
- Does this worker coordinate with other workers? (Law #8)
- Does this observer compensate instead of escalate? (Law #24)
3. In Debugging
When something feels wrong, I trace the layers and find the boundary violation. 90% of bugs have been boundary violations, not logic errors.
4. In Refactoring
When deciding whether to refactor, I ask: does current code violate these laws? If yes, refactor. If no, leave it alone.
What These Laws Actually Prevent
Each law prevents a specific failure mode I've seen destroy complex systems:
- Law #1 prevents the "it works on my machine" problem (hidden state)
- Law #2 prevents the "god object" problem (logic everywhere)
- Law #8 prevents the "coordination overhead" problem (workers blocking each other)
- Law #11 prevents the "framework lock-in" problem (can't swap domains)
- Law #16 prevents the "whack-a-mole debugging" problem (fixing symptoms)
- Law #22 prevents the "technical debt spiral" problem (shortcuts compound)
- Law #28 prevents the "requires a PhD to operate" problem (complex monitoring)
These aren't theoretical. I learned each one by violating it and watching the system break.
Beyond My System
While these laws emerged from building a specific autonomous system, they apply to:
- Microservices: Laws #3, #4, #8, #13 directly map to service boundaries
- Event-driven systems: Laws #1, #5, #6, #7 prevent state explosion
- Distributed systems: Laws #8, #18, #28 keep coordination manageable
- Domain-driven design: Laws #11, #12, #14, #23 enforce bounded contexts
- Functional programming: Laws #9, #10, #12, #25, #26 mirror pure functions
These are patterns that appear in every well-designed complex system.
The difference: I've compressed them into enforceable laws instead of vague principles.
The Real Tests
Here's how to know if your system follows these laws:
The Domain Swap Test (Law #11)
Can you swap your entire business domain without changing infrastructure?
In my system: I could swap the problem domain completely. Vision processing interprets different data types. Action execution handles different command types. Everything else unchanged.
If this works: you have true agnosticism.
The Random Decision Test (Law #27)
Can you replace your decision logic with random choices and have the system still run?
In my system: I could replace the decision engine with a function that returns random actions. The system still captures data, validates state, executes actions, handles failures.
If this works: your boundaries are clean.
The Tired Developer Test (Law #22)
When exhausted at 2am, are you tempted to bypass boundaries?
If yes: your architecture is too complex.
If no: your boundaries are obvious enough to follow even when tired.
Enforcement
Laws are useless if they're not enforced.
In my system, I enforce these through:
1. Automated Linting
- No imports that violate layer boundaries
- No direct state access outside contract layers
- No shared mutable state between workers
2. Architecture Tests
- Domain swap tests (can infrastructure handle different domains)
- Module removal tests (delete decision engine, system still runs)
- Boundary tests (execution can't access strategy, strategy can't access execution)
3. Code Review Checklist Every change gets checked against the laws. If a law is violated, the change is blocked.
4. Documentation Mandate Every module's documentation lists which laws it depends on. This makes violations obvious.
A Warning
These laws are strict. They will feel constraining at first.
You'll be tempted to violate them "just this once" because it's easier.
Don't.
The value of these laws isn't in the individual rules. It's in the cumulative effect of following all of them.
A system that follows these laws:
- Debugs in minutes (boundaries isolate failures)
- Scales linearly (no coordination overhead)
- Evolves safely (domain swaps don't break infrastructure)
- Operates autonomously (clean boundaries need less supervision)
A system that violates these laws — even occasionally — loses all of these properties.
The Bottom Line
Complex systems fail in predictable ways:
- Boundaries blur
- State leaks
- Layers couple
- Coordination explodes
- Debugging becomes impossible
- Refactoring requires rewrites
These 30 laws prevent those failures.
They're not about being ideologically pure. They're about building systems that still work two years from now when you've forgotten the original design.
Purity buys freedom. Entropy buys maintenance.
